Based on the series of novels by acclaimed wuxia author, Jin Yong, the comic's initial part of the story revolves around a highly coveted manual containing a powerful martial arts technique known as the "Bixie Swordplay Manual". The manual is an heirloom of the Lin family, who run the Fuwei Agency, a private security service, in Fuzhou. Yu Canghai, the leader of the Qingcheng Sect, leads his followers to massacre the Lins and attempts to seize the manual for himself, but does not find it. Lin Pingzhi, the sole survivor from the Lin family, is saved by Yue Buqun, the head of the Mount Hua Sect, which is a member of the Five Mountains Sword Sects Alliance. Yue Buqun accepts Lin Pingzhi as an apprentice and trains him in swordplay.
Meanwhile, Yue Buqun's most senior student, Linghu Chong, an orphaned, happy-go-lucky but honourable swordsman who has a penchant for alcoholic drinks finds himself befriending the notorious bandit Tian Boguang and saves Yilin, a nun from the (North) Mount Heng Sect, from Tian's lecherous advances.

Alternate English translations of the title include Laughing in the Wind, The Peerless Gallant Errant, and The Proud and Gallant Wanderer. Another alternative title, State of Divinity, is used for some of the novel’s adaptations.

Based on Jin Yong's novel of the same name. After the Dashing King seized the capital, all the generals of the Ming dynasty surrendered and gave their wealth as tributes to save their own lives. In a few days, gold and silver piled up like a mountain. After the Dashing King retreated from the capital, he sent his trusted subordinates to hide the treasure somewhere beyond the Great Wall, intending to use it as a military fund to make his comeback. In the 45th year of Emperor Qianlong's reign (1780), three groups of people started fighting over a treasure box somewhere in Changbai Mountains. The box content did not merely revealed the location of the Dashing King's treasure hoard. It also revealed the past related to the Dashing King's four personal guards as well as the plots and grievances of several generations. Note: The Dashing King (Li Zicheng) was the Chinese rebel leader who overthrew the Ming dynasty of China in 1644. He was later forced to abandon the capital city as the Manchu Banner Armies invaded. The Dashing King himself appeared in later chapters of Jin Yong's The Deer & The Cauldron (鹿鼎记).
